Even some folks who are pretty computer savvy, and can make Microsoft Office jump through hoops, are less knowledgeable when it comes to the operating system (OS) and networking technology that drives the Internet. Most people who do not work in that end of the business need to do a little homework when confronted with the question, Should I use a Linux or Windows server?

There are some arcane hybrids and do-it-yourself OS schemes around, but the OS choice you have at most hosting companies today is between Linux and Windows. Hosting companies don’t always clarify exactly why one might be better than the other for a particular customer or situation, leading some folks to conclude that there is really no difference at all. This is not the case. It does matter what kind of server you use, and there are clear differences between Linux and Windows.

Licensing costs money

All the various flavors of Windows, from the multiple versions of the new Windows 7 to the “enterprise” (server) packages, belong wholly to Microsoft, also known as the “Evil Empire” to the hackers and open source fans that prefer Linux. Linux, being open source, is free. This is the first major difference with important repercussions, since the hosting company’s costs for licensing Windows will be passed on to the customer (that’s you). Free, open source Linux means lower hosting costs all around, if only by a few dollars per month.

Getting a Windows hosting package is going to be a bit more expensive, but not so much more that you should make the difference a deal-breaker. Other factors – the make and model of the servers, company location, package offer details – can affect pricing as much or more, so make sure to get the big picture and don’t bog yourself down in an “OS controversy.” That said, you should know the operational, stylistic and tech-related differences between the two server types in order to make an informed decision.

Slow down and consider

Now, simply because you use a PC with Microsoft (MS) Windows, or even built your own Web site with it, doesn’t mean you have to have a Windows server. You will access your site through such tools as Web-based control panels and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software, and can do so from a Macintosh running Mac OS X, a PC running Windows 7 or a homemade computer running Mandrake or RedHat (distributions of Linux). Some commands will differ, perhaps, but all the tools do the same thing, in much the same way.

Slow down enough to consider what you actually need to do with your site and what you expect from the server (and hosting firm). E-mail protocols, both IMAP and POP, work fine in both environments, as do PHP, the standardized HTML and XML, JavaScript and “file helpers” like Adobe Flash and Reader. However, Frontpage extensions, ASP, the .Net environment, Access, Windows media and other MS technologies will require a Windows server. For these particular features, Linux support ranges from limited to non-existent, and trying to work around the restrictions will cost you a lot more than paying the difference between the hosting packages.

Security and management

There have been some contentious arguments about the relative stability and security records of Linux and Windows server environments. Some computer professionals are simply knee-jerk anti-MS partisans, and there are also any number of MS fans that are anti-Linux (as well as anti-Mac). The fact that Windows is the most common OS in the world has both advantages and drawbacks. Millions of people are working on making it better, and just as many are trying to shoot it down in flames.

On the other hand, Linux is now most common server OS in use and hackers have had greater than expected success subverting it, too. The fact is that the platform in use is not as important to security as systems administration, attentive technicians and company management. If security is high on your list, you need to examine the company as much or more than the company’s equipment. Don’t take their marketing materials as a promise – do some due diligence here. It matters.

A toss-up?

There is probably little difference in server performance because of the choice of OS. Again, it can come down to how the companies install their software and maintain their hardware – Linux just might be “faster” in some functions than Windows if, in fact, the Windows OS was installed in default mode and not “tweaked.” (This can be true of Linux installs, too, of course.) In the broadest terms, performance is comparable and you can have a fine, effective and efficient hosting experience with either kind of server.

The bottom line is that you should certainly consider the kind of server, particularly if you use MS technologies than need a Windows environment, but your search should be for a good host, not a good server. A company with the best equipment in the world will be no help to you if it is mismanaged, oblivious to security lapses and technologically out of its depth. With a rough equivalence in features, reliability, security and cost, a “winner” is impossible to choose beforehand. You can win – or lose – with any kind of server, so keep looking at the big picture and just make your decision.

So maybe you have heard about Really Simple Syndication (RSS) and maybe you have seen the RSS symbol on blogs and other websites?

Perhaps you have even used it to catch up on your news from your all time favorite websites.  Great free resources like Google Reader makes it a breeze to keep up with the latest happenings on topics of interest to you.

And with rss aggregator websites actively wanting to receive content via rss feeds,  and these sites almost always giving the ability to the website owners to “send” their rss feed for free, the best time is right now for you to start using this in your internet marketing.

You see any time you do rss feed submissions to these websites, they store the rss feed on their servers and provide a backlink (a link back to your website).  And because google love new content, they visit these sites more often than static sites, and as a result they rank these websites more prominently in the search engines, meaning more web visitors find that content.

The end result is the website you have gets found by more visitors, either indirectly by the link on the RSS Syndication/Aggregation site, or directly in the search engines because your website now ranks better because of the links from the rss aggregator sites.

In the past it has been rather time consuming to submit these feeds to these websites.  But software is constantly coming out that will automate this process.

Early versions of the software would require you to manually create rss feed files and to specify which sites to submit to, and although quicker than a pure manual process would still end up a time consuming process.

More recent versions of the software actually create the rss feed automatically and submit automatically to the rss aggregator websites every time you post.  There are versions of the software that work as a desktop application, or on a server.  There are even versions of the software that work with the most popular blog platform on the internet, Wordpress.

Still more versions of the software allow you to merge feeds (create a new rss feed from two or more existing rss feeds) and to then allow you to submit that for more backlinks and more rankings!

So make sure you take the time to look for the most advanced rss submit technology available and invest the time to understand rss feeds.  Your web site will thank you in the form of extra web traffic and better rankings in google.

The HDRR concept has been around for a long time, but it wasnt until a couple of years ago that was highly developed and used. We can see it today improving photographs and even in video games. Its mainly used to improve the representation of dark and bright areas in an image, and besides, greatly augments the contrast by making bright things look brighter, and dark things darker. Additionally, flat scenes look much better by using this technology, because light and dark can be represented with a greater variety of levels.

However, we also face some limitations when we want to use HDRR. Most displays can’t represent HDRR images because the values exceed what they display can show. In order to fight this limitations, two techniques are used: Tone Mapping and Light Blooming. Tone mapping is a technique which maps the colors so they can be shown in an output device and stills preserve the image and the colour to appreciate it. Light Blooming is a graphic shader effect that is mainly used in video games. Its used when we need more brightness than the one our output device can show. To do so, Light Blooming expands a source of light by multiplying the image, blurring it and then redrawing it over the original one, that way, if there is a brighter image that needs to be shown, the illusion is created by making the scene softer.

Now that we know what a HDRR is, well talk about how we can create one. The basic thing we need in order to create a High Dynamic Range Rendering are three pictures with different exposures. You can work with more and get better results, but three will work. In order to get different exposures you can either change the exposure compensation of your camera or change the shutter speed. When you take the pictures make sure you use a tripod, that way youll make sure your shooting the same angle, and you can overlap your pictures later (if your camera has the bracketing option use it too). Using ISO 100 is highly recommended since the less sensibility the more exposure time (for the same reason be sure to get a tripod, or else your picture will look blurry!)

When we have our pictures, we can easily create our HDRR images through our favourite image editor, like Photoshop.

In order to create a HDR image using Photoshop, we have to go to the File menu, Automate, Merge to HDR. We select our pictures and make sure we select the Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images option.

Photoshop automatically determines the White Point (Lightest tone of the image), but you can modify it if your lighting tends to be burned. If you choose to work on 32 bit/Channel image, this is pretty much where it ends, but if you want to work with 16 bit/Channel images you will get some more features to improve your photo or create nice effects.

Exposure and Gamma allows you to adjust the exposure (brightness) and gamma (contrast). Highlight Compression applies a tonal curve which reduces highlight contrast in order to restore contrast in the rest of the image. Equalize Histogram is a method which spreads the histogram peaks, making our picture homogeneous. Finally, Local Adaptation is the most flexible way to modify the HDR picture, since it does local contrast enhancement; the tonal curve can be adjusted to get better results.

If you want to create a HDRR image of a moving element you can set up your camera in order to take pictures in a RAW format. A RAW format is a file type proper from every camera fabricator that saves the image just like the camera sensors perceived it. Youll get bigger files but you can change from one single picture the values of exposure of the picture.

But, if with one single RAW image you can create your HDRR image, why bother to take several pictures in a JPG format? Well, since RAW images depend on the cameras sensor also have a limited range, and, even if its wider than JPGs range, doesnt give us as much quality as the one we can get by taking several JPG pictures and overlapping them. Bright objects, strong textures and color differences will look great in the final HDRR picture.
